The living room is comfortable, but the back bedroom feels like a sauna. It’s one of the most common complaints we hear from South Florida homeowners, and it’s rarely the air conditioner’s fault. Most of the time, the problem is how the cooled air is getting to that room, or how much heat the room is taking on.

Duct Problems

Leaky or disconnected ducts

If the duct feeding that room is torn or has pulled loose in the attic, much of the cool air ends up in the attic instead of the room. Rooms at the end of long duct runs are usually affected first. Read more about leaky air ducts and how sealing fixes them.

Crushed, kinked, or sagging flex duct

Flexible duct that’s been stepped on, pinched around a truss, or left to sag between supports can cut airflow to a fraction of what it should be.

Undersized ducts or too few vents

Some rooms were never given enough supply air. This is common in additions, converted garages, and bonus rooms tacked onto an existing system.

No path for air to return

Air has to be able to get back to the return grille. If a bedroom door stays closed and the room has no return or transfer grille, supply air can’t flow in well, and the room stays warm.

Heat Gain

  • West-facing windows take on intense afternoon sun.
  • Thin or missing attic insulation over that room lets heat pour through the ceiling. See why proper attic insulation matters here.
  • Rooms over a garage or with more exterior walls gain heat faster.

Quick Things to Check

  • Make sure the vent is fully open and not blocked by furniture or rugs.
  • Hold your hand up to the vent and compare the airflow with other rooms.
  • Leave the door open for a few hours and see if the room cools down.
  • Replace your air filter. A clogged filter weakens airflow everywhere, but the farthest rooms feel it most.
  • Close blinds on sunny windows during the hottest part of the day.

How We Fix It

We start by inspecting the ductwork that feeds the room: looking for leaks, disconnections, crushed sections, and undersized runs. Depending on what we find, the fix might be sealing and re-supporting the existing duct, adding or upsizing a supply run, adding a return or transfer grille, or restoring or replacing damaged ductwork. If the room is simply taking on too much heat, better attic insulation can make a big difference.

A bigger AC is rarely the answer. Oversizing the system usually makes humidity worse without fixing the room that’s too hot.
